Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon Progress

readathon_edited-1-300x193I AM AWAKE! YES! (that’s a good start!) I got a little ahead of myself and was ready to go at 1am yesterday. With 5 hours sleep last night, I made it through a very long day on the road for a church service. I’ve had about 2-3 hours of napping and my hubby even woke me up 10 minutes ago!

START TIME = 1AM
(yep! being all the way over in New Zealand has its down sides.)

Note for cheerleaders: I checked with Andi yesterday as I couldn’t remember where I said I would be during #readathon. You can find me at twitter.com/sharlenesays. That’s the best place to catch me.

OPENING HOUR MEME

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Gisborne, New Zealand.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to finishing The Assassin’s Curse. I started it a month ago.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Ritz crackers. I stopped by the grocery store on our way home tonight & this was the treat I wanted. Tried to bypass all the lollies & chocolate. It was my birthday last week so there has been no shortage of chocolate in my house.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
I’m Sharlene. I read YA & NA, mostly romance and fantasy. I’ve been blogging for years on wordpress.com but put on my big girl pants & bought a domain name in June & carved my own little space on the interwebs right here. I cant remember how many readathons I have done. It’s not that many. I’m not a newbie or by no means a veteran. Dewey’s & Bout of Books are my fave!

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
I’m just a reader this time around. I wasn’t sure I would be available as I normally have work or other commitments. I didn’t wanna put pressure on myself & sign up as a cheerleader and not be able to cheer along a team. Anyway, I’ve gotta go. I’m using up my first reading hour! Ciao for now!

Hour 8

I AM UP! I woke while hubby was getting ready for his first church service of the day & have been stirring so I’m putting my alertness to good use. READING! I’ve made me some jam toast, a cuppa, phone is charged & I’m ready. Here’s hoping I don’t drop my toast all over my library book.

2. How many books have you read so far? 1. The Assassin’s Curse.
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I’m looking forward to finishing this & Frosbitten. I might be able to start something else too!
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Twitter is my constant distraction. I’m gonna see if there is a sprint on goodreads, do that this hour & take a break. I need to do a little spring cleaning of my reading area.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I’m finding it easier to leave updates each hour. They still take about 15 minutes. Next time I might just TBR, Warm Up entry, Mid Event survey & a Wrap post & use Twitter for Hourly updates. That will save me even more time. I’ve had a couple of cheers & I’ve given a few using #TeamRogue but I haven’t had a lot of book discussion. Definitely gonna sign back up for cheer-leading if I can in April.

Hour 13 – Over halfway!

I’ve been pretty slack this hour. I gave myself a half hour break. Had a little bite to eat & even put some clothes in the washing machine. It’s quiet while the hubby isn’t home so I’m back to reading for the last fifteen minutes. Will include progress with the next hour.

Hour 14

» How much time have I spent reading? My guess, about 40 minutes.

» Mini Challenges: Andi our lovely host at 24 Hour Readathon & Estelle’s Revenge, has put up a Pet Challenge. We aren’t allowed pets in our flat so I substituted for a hubby. Here’s the link to see what he’s up to while I read: http://t.co/fcjFErM2OF

Hour 17

I started reading Frostbitten the day before readathon started because I was all ready to go on the wrong day! I know! How could I get the date wrong? I got the time right, but I forgot to add one day. Stupid me.

» What book am I reading? Frostbitten by Heather Beck.
» How many pages have I read? I’m starting on page 163. I’m on page 192. I’ve read 29 pages.
» How much time have I spent reading? 45 minutes.
» Running total: 473 pages / 480 minutes
» Mini Challenges: Nisaba Be Praised hosted a Mad Libs Challenge.

This is the original passage from Frostbitten by Heather Beck:

Anastasia gasped as she watched the woods become nothing more than a dark blur. Her heart thudded within her chest, and she clung onto Frost’s fur until her hands felt numb. Nonetheless, she’d never felt so alive. It was like he wanted to share with her the greatest aspect of being a werewolf, and she couldn’t help but experience a sense of power from being situated so high upon him. Together, Anastasia felt like she and Frost could accomplish anything. They truly were the rulers of the woods.

I asked my facebook friends for 2 names, a place, 3 body parts, 5 adjectives, 3 verbs and 1 animal. The new passage reads:

Anthea crashed as she watched the Opera House become nothing more than a burnt crisp. Her heart banged within her chest and she clung to Sean’s fingers until her skin felt so rough. It was like Sean wanted to share with her the greatest aspect of being a dog, and Anthea couldn’t help but experience a sense of bravery from being situated so high upon Sean. Together, Anthea felt like she and Sean could accomplish anything. They truly were the rulers of the Opera House.

Hour 18

The madlibs took me forever but I managed to read a few pages, but will add those to the next hour.

Hour 19

» What book am I reading? Frostbitten by Heather Beck.
» How many pages have I read? I’m on page 219. I’ve read 27 pages. I was distracted with dinner.
» How much time have I spent reading? Not long, maybe 20 minutes.
» Running total: 500 pages / 500 minutes

Hour 20

We are coming down to the final hours of the readathon. I’m so distracted right now as Pitch Perfect is showing on tv & I love this movie.

» What book am I reading? Frostbitten by Heather Beck.
» How many pages have I read? I’m on page 258. I’ve read 39 pages.
» How much time have I spent reading? 40 minutes.
» Running total: 539 pages / 540 minutes

Hour 21

» What book am I reading? I finished Book 3 – Frostbitten by Heather Beck.
» How many pages have I read? I’ve read 31 pages.
» How much time have I spent reading? 45 minutes.
» Running total: 570 pages / 585 minutes

With only a few hours left, I might call it an end to my reading and cheer everyone else on. GO #TeamEliot !!!! I’ll be with our readers til the very end.

Hour 24 – End of Event Meme

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Probably Hour 5. I had a sleep prior to the readathon but I knew if I didn’t have another sleep I would’ve crashed later on & slept forever.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? The Assassin’s Curse duo-logy. It’s nice being able to finish a series during the readathon. They aren’t long so if I wasn’t blogging every hour, I would’ve read them quicker & got in a 4th book.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I know it’s new & you’re still working out the kinks but the goodreads group needs another couple of moderators. Set times for reading sprints is a good idea and have the threads up early so people know what time to come back for them. There are so many members in the group & heaps of discussion took place prior to, but I felt there was little participation during the 24 Hours.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? It was odd for me not being an official cheerleader. I’m definitely signing up for cheering in April. It gives me something to do during my slump moments.
  5. How many books did you read? I finished 3 books. I had already started 2 of them though.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? The Assassin’s Curse, The Pirate’s Wish & Frostbitten.
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? I enjoyed The Pirate’s Wish most as the relationship between the pirate & the assassin developed.
  8. Which did you enjoy least? About the readathon… I got a little excited and was ready a day too early. It just didn’t click I had to wait another day so I was excited at 1am on the wrong day!
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I read on Twitter that someone didn’t get cheered, that sucks so I love the idea of #TeamRogue that anyone can use that hashtag to provide cheers from. I used it a lot & cheered for that person who didn’t get an official cheer. If the teams could work out a schedule so at least one person is cheering for their team at all times.
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? April 25th is already in my calendar! I’m gonna cheer next time. I will donate a couple of prizes too, probably Book Depository vouchers as I’m international & they have free shipping! It’s the best!
