Progress | Dewey’s #Readathon | April 2016

Hour 24 | We are the Champions!

Can’t believe I made it til the very end. I gave up on reading & just cheered my little heart out. I made it to all the #TeamEmu members. Unfortunately couldn’t leave comments for everyone. Either on Tumblr, Private or non-participating were the main reasons you wouldn’t have heard from me.

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? It’s always around Hour 4. That’s like 4 am in New Zealand and I can never stay awake.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Graphic Novels, Short stories & Comic Books. Short or quick reads just to keep you really engaged.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season? Perhaps send a few cheerleaders to try reach those non-Twitter participants. I know there are so very few of us, but it felt we were leaving out so many people. I tried to make it through the list Andi gave a link for, and only made it like 25 people.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? In saying that above, I think the Teams worked well this year. #TeamEmu all the way!
  5. How many books did you read? I finished a book that I had already started prior, and started 2 books that I will continue to finish this week.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? I enjoyed listening to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the car with my husband. It’s the most he’s been involved in my reading. Second most is The Revenants.
  8. Which did you enjoy least? Order of the Phoenix. I had already read the good parts.
  9. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I say I should sign up just to be a cheerleader, but I love reading too much. Will see how my assignments are holding up in October before I make my decision 🙂 Thanks everyone!!!

Hour 23 | 2 Hours to go

Today has gone so fast. I wish I had been more prepared but I have been pre-occupied with work, study and family.

I have read another 26 pages of Revenant. It’s taking me forever to get through it. Currently on page 166 of 297. Not gonna finish it tonight. Might just spend the last 2 hours cheering. It seems to be where I have been most productive today.

All the best to everyone on the final legs of the #readathon. #TeamEmu has been AMAZING! Wrap up entry to come.

Hour 21 | The End is Near!

Spent about 10 minutes watching The Life of Pi. I’ve listened to the audiobook but I know the movie is amazing.

Spent 30 minutes cheering for #TeamRogue participants. It looks like a number of them aren’t participating or perhaps gave the wrong link. grrr. time wasters.

The last 15 minutes I’m gonna read!

Hour 20 | 4 Hours to go

Since the halfway mark, I’ve been on the road, late night shopping and getting dinner. On the road I did manage to download Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.

Reading Progress: We listened to the first 3 chapters, approx. 10% on the book. I really liked the set up to this book. Listening to the prequel conversations with the Muggle Prime Minister and the Minister of Magic. Then the scene with Narcissa, Bellatrix & Severus Snape. Really sets up the scene to how severe the situation has been since the Minister announced the return of Lord Voldemort.

I also read 4 pages of Revenant before I hit the road. It was the saddest 4 pages. Betsy witnesses a suicide of one of the patients.

Gonna do some cheering for the rest of this hour & then get some more reading in. Ciao for now.

Hour 12 | Halfway!

My husband left for church through the last hour. I told him to pray for the #readathon 🙂

Mid-Event Survey:

1. What are you reading right now? Revenants: The Odyssey Home. There is an excerpt available online here via the author.
2. How many books have you read so far? Cheekily, I finished the last 6% audio of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Revenants. It’s just so mysterious.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I tried a pre-readathon this time and woke up just for the start. I felt a little groggy for the first hour and then got into it. I crashed again after 4 hours, but I only slept for 3 hours. That’s been my biggest interruption so far. But in an hour I will be on the road with my hubby. Gonna have to download an audiobook because I don’t wanna waste the few hours we will be travelling.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? Just the sheer amount of people who are taking part! It’s amazing. Did we hit 2000? I hope so!!!

Hour 11 | #TeamRogue

I dedicated my 11th hour to #TeamRogue. There are like hundreds of readers who don’t have a Twitter account. I managed to hit 20 blogs, grams, tumblrs (wish I had a tumblr, because I couldn’t leave a note!)

Hour 10 | Don’t lose your mind

This hour, I discovered @BookyWookie, a #newbie to Dewey’s and on #TeamEmu. Deb hadn’t started reading because she was still waiting for the Start Time in her hometown. LUCKY! She had been reading anyway, so she will continue Harry Potter now 🙂 Love cheering for new ones. Go visit her.

Currently listening to the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I want to finish something soon for a boost and I think Revenants is too long. I might not even finish it for Dewey’s.

Hour 8 | After a nap

I managed to sleep for 3 hours. Woke up right in time for Hour 8 and I have been cheering ever since! #RahRahREADATHON!

Hour 5 | Time to read & do all the things

But not this girl, cause she is going to bed!

Reading Progress: I’m up to page 136. This vet upstairs is being more of a mystery. American who fought with Canada, morsing his story to Bartholomew and Betsy. What does this man have to do with Congressman Hanna? related perhaps? I don’t know! Will pick it up again when I wake.

HOUR 4 | Where are you now?

Another hour gone. It’s 3am and there IS NO COFFEE IN MY HOUSE!!! I’m fading fast and sleep has never looked so sweet.

Reading Progress: I read 12 pages in Hour 3. I made myself a cuppa, had a slice of feijoa cake and sent so many tweets.

I aim to visit everyone listed in #TeamEmu before the end of this Dewey’s. I CAN DO IT!

I submitted my postcard for the Taco Roadtrip Hourly Challenge before I could copy+paste it here. Durrr… sleep deprived an barely keepin my eyes open. One more hour! (and then maybe 4am is a good time for sleep…)

HOUR 3 | We’ve only just begun!

I absolutely LOVE that song!

I’m gonna try get a photo on Instagram before Hour 6 for this hourly mini challenge. Wish me luck. I’ve gotta go find some books.

Reading Progress: In the last hour, I managed to get in 26 pages. Not bad for 30 mins reading time. Currently on page 99 of Revenants: The Odyssey Home.

HOUR 2 | I’ll be out all day

The hourly Mini Challenge is to link 5 books with childhood memories.

This is gonna be a struggle for me as I did not grow up reading a lot of books. The library was my nemesis. I forever lost books and had library fees.

  1. I do remember The Babysitter’s Club. I think I forced my parents into buying me one of the books.
  2. Milly Molly Mandy is a book title I can remember from my childhood but I couldn’t tell you when I read it, nor why I have fond memories of the title?
  3. I don’t know what the titles were, but those short novels that let you pick the direction of the story at the bottom of every page. They were filled with so much action and some pages, the story would abruptly end, so I found myself sneaking back to the previous page and taking the second path. That’s all I can think of. It’s 15 mins in and I need to get in some reading for Hour 2. Will post my progress during the next hour. Happy reading!

    HOUR 1 | Doin’ a happy dance!

I missed the starting minute. That is crucial Cheering Time! So I dedicated my first hour to visiting some of #TeamEmu. There are 105 members including myself and I have been gettin’ my tweet on & even threw in a few GIFs, which is so unlike me. But hour 2 is hot on my tail and I wanna get in some reading before I CRASH. It’s so early on in the piece, but it’s now 1am in NZ and after a long day (5am start) I’m feeling sleepy….zzz…

Opening Meme | HOUR 0!

Good Evening. I had a 2 hour sleep which has made me so tired. It is 11:58pm. I’ve got 2 minutes to submit my Pre-Readathon update before we get STARTED.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? New Zealand
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Revenants: The Odyssey Home
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Feijoa Cake
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I’m so unprepared! This isn’t my first readathon so I don’t know why I didn’t prepare?! This is my seventh Dewey’s. I need more sleep. Dancing may be required to keep me awake.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? More reading! I say that but I already want to go cheer my butt off on Twitter. It’s 12:01am. Let’s get READING!!!

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon | Apr 2016

I am so in! The readathon is April 23, 2016.

For me, it’s starting at midnight, but you can find your start time here.

Don’t know what Dewey’s is about? See here.

Keen to join in the fun? Reader sign ups are here. They will close during the readathon, so get in before it does!

If you’re not keen on the reading, sign up to be a cheerleader here. I try to cheer because connecting with other readers makes the readathon even better.

And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can even donate a prize here. If you can post internationally, then that’s even better. There were like 2000 readers worldwide in Oct 2015, and it’s still growing!

My TBR pile will be posted soon. Likely to Instagram & Tweet throughout the 24 hours, so make sure to check those too.

Aue! I’m gonna be so busy! Come join me in this madness, all the best people do 🙂

xoxo Sharlene

Dewey’s 24 Hr Readathon | Oct 2015

Hour 24

The end is near. I’ve just sent out my last cheers to those on Youtube.

I read a total of 225 pages of Book 3, Rock Addiction. I’m up to Part 2 and I don’t know where the story is going. Molly’s gonna move to USA and they’re gonna live happily ever after? It’s never that easy.

Readathon has been fun. I’m off to cheer everyone at the finish line on Twitter.

Which hour was most daunting for you? Hour 3, it was around 3am when I just needed to sleep.
Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy series. They are short stories, spin-off’ed from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.
Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Ask for some cheer leader organisers during the readathon. Just to keep the cheer sheets tidy.
What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The Youtube cheerleaders were left to their own cheers and it worked well. Andi or Heather didn’t have to keep an eye on us.
How many books did you read? 2 & a half. There was no TBR plan. Just went with the flow. No pressure.
What were the names of the books you read? Nothing But Shadows, The Evil We Love, & Rock Addiction.
Which book did you enjoy most? Nothing But Shadows. Just brought some feels & I miss these characters from the earlier books in the series.
Which did you enjoy least? How people sign up to be cheered and don’t leave direct links to their TBR or where they are updating. Youtube is particularly bad when they don’t have any relevant videos uploaded.
If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? If readers haven’t posted a TBR or video related to Dewey’s within the first 12 hours, delete them from the list. It’s a waste of time having the entire team checking back for the entire 24 hours.
How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I think we need more cheerleaders, so definitely sticking with that. I might use Instagram as my progress spot as I can put up quick videos. Seriously considering hosting the Livestream Chats.

Hour 18

I’ve felt pretty relaxed this readathon. That might have something to do with only have two short books for my TBR at the start of the 24 hours. No pressure. I read those books pretty quickly but I gave myself plenty of time for cheerleading and social media.

I’ve read 131 pages in the past 4 hours. With distractions at home, including my comfy couch causing me to lose an hour to a nap, that’s pretty good. I’m giving my eyes a break from my screen & off to Youtube to do some more cheering. Even though my page count is relatively small, I’m happy with my participation. Are you reading? How are you getting on?

I took part in the Recommendation Engine mini-challenge. You should see all the entries. You’re bound to find a book that your interested in and add a title to your TBR.

This hour, I finished The Evil We Love and have moved on to Nalini Singh’s Rock Addiction. It’s new adult, romance, a genre I devour. Ciao for now, I’ve got a book to read.

Hour 12: Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now? The Evil We Love by Cassandra Clare
2. How many books have you read so far? One.
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Heaps! Cheerleading has been fun. I watched the ALL BLACKS vs FRANCE quarter final. I’ve napped & been to the airport. I’ve had two cups of coffee & I’m thinking about a cup of tea & doing my laundry soon. Life happens. You just gotta live it.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I discovered the live stream, which is watching someone while they read & listening to the occasional update. That was a surprise & it’s sparked my interest in Live streaming quarterly chats. Anyway, I’ve gotta go get my washing in. Looks like rain!

Hour 11

ALL BLACKS FOR THE WIN! Woo Hoo! It was an awesome game and a really good distraction.
Have you seen Nicole’s readathon Live Stream? She’s brave. I couldn’t do that, but I’m thinking about hosting quarterly Live Chats for the next readathon. Will suggest it to Andi & Heather.

I’ve started The Evil We Love by Cassandra Clare, the next in the Shadowhunter Academy series. Off to do some serious reading this hour. See ya later on!

Hour 7

I had to get up at 6am and take my friend to the airport. I’ve had roughly 3 hours sleep. That’s enough to see me through for the next 5-ish hours. I’m multi-tasking now, cheering, tweeting, going to start my second short story shortly and during Hour 8 I will be watching the All Blacks vs France in the Quarter Finals for the Rugby World Cup #NZLvFRA.

I stayed up, cheered for the first hour & managed to finish a book in Hour 2 or 3.

Book Finished: Nothing But Shadows by Cassandra Clare
Rated 5/5
5 Leaf

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Gisborne, New Zealand
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Nothing But Shadows by Cassandra Clare. I’m currently reading the Shadowhunter Academy series.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I haven’t prepared or bought anything!
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I prefer paperbacks but I end up reading e-books because I’ve become too lazy to go to the public library.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I’ve royally not planned a single thing. My sign up post went up this week, my youtube video uploaded about 30 mins ago & the READATHON has begun! Yup… I should be reading!

♪♫ Yes, it’s back. Back again. Dewey’s back. Tell a friend ♪

I’m so excited for Dewey’s. I’m seriously behind still for my goodreads challenge, so I’m 100% effort in reading this weekend. I still plan on cheering a team like mad too. I’m less excited about my start time. After years of taking part, you’d think I’d be used to the 1:00am start time… Hopefully I can get a nap in on Saturday arvo. My plan as always is to be awake by midnight, and be trolling #readathon on Twitter, just to make sure I get the start time right.

So, what’s on my TBR this Dewey’s? I’m not sure yet but a VIDEO is coming soon!

If you haven’t signed up, it’s so much fun. Make sure you do! Here’s the sign up link.  It isn’t open forever, so just sign up now.

I’ll be back to post my progress. Ciao for now!

Dewey’s Readathon Progress

readathonHey everyone!

Sorry I’ve been slow on the updating front. I have been out of town with multiple Anzac Services and a church service this morning.

Here is a pic of my TBR I posted on Instagram earlier this week

A photo posted by Sharlene Smith (@sharlenesays) on

I managed to get some pre-readathon cheering in for #TeamDorothy. I can’t help but think of ruby red slippers when I write that.

Hours 1 – 2

I don’t know why this happens every time, but I got the start time wrong! I thought it was 1am, but turns out it was a midnight start. That worked out in my favour. I stayed up for a couple of hours reading. Reading Progess: 66 pages of Confess by Colleen Hoover

Hours 3 – 7

Yep, my iPad almost fell on my face! I hate when that happens so I went to sleep.

Hours 8 – 17

I got a few more pages in during these hours. I’ve also visited the #TeamDorothy readers, and updated our cheer sheet. Now that I’m home and my laptop is charged, I’m READY, SET, GO! Reading Progress: read 100 pages of Confess by Colleen Hoover

Hour 18 – 19

Reading Progress: read 16 pages of Game of Thrones graphic novel. Back to Hoover for Hour 20 I think. I want to finish it! I spent hour 19 cheering for #TeamDorothy and didn’t manage to get everyone, so after another hour for reading, I’m gonna cheer for the rest of our team!

Hour 20

Reading Progress: I’m on page 128 of Confess by Colleen Hoover. 28 pages in that hour. Got a little distracted by a movie on TV, but I’m determined to finish it!

Hour 21

I’m back to cheering for the second half of the #TeamDorothy list. Hopefully it doesn’t take up the whole hour. I wanna get back to Confess.

Hour 22

Turns out I had a late dinner, Kentucky Fried Chicken for the last half hour so gonna get back to reading for Hour 22

I can’t believe I haven’t participated in a SINGLE challenge!

Hour 23

The final 2 hours.

Reading Progress: I’m on page 155 of Confess. I don’t know why it’s taking me so long. But I’m into Part Two. I feel like things are about to get interesting again. I’m gonna read/cheer to the very end.

Hour 24!

Reading Progress: I made it to chapter 20 of Confess. I won’t finish it so I’m off to do some final cheering. But before I do,

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Hour 2 when I couldn’t keep my eyes open. It’s so early on but at 2am, after not many hours of sleep, my head just couldn’t resist my pillow.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
Oooh, I don’t even know. I wasn’t much of a reader this time. I really need Dewey’s to coincide with a weekend I have absolutely nothing on. It hasn’t happened yet, and I feel like I’ve been doing this for years!
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Cheering for Youtube accounts is really difficult. People don’t upload every hour so sometimes you’re looking through your cheer list and only one person has updated. I thought creating a Collection of the Youtube channels would help but the spreadsheet works best.
Actually, one suggestion. The cheer lists need decent space for comments, like “not using Youtube. Using Twitter” or “hasn’t posted during Hours 3-12”. I found myself still clicking on links to those who had 3 XXX because I was optimistic. Turns out it was a waste of time!
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I’m not sure. This one felt different for me, but I can’t really put my figure on words to explain it.
  5. How many books did you read?
Not even a single book! I read about 170 pages, which is less than what I can read in half a day…
  6. What were the names of the books you read?
    Confess by Colleen Hoover
A Game of Thrones Graphic Novel: volume 2
  7. Which book did you enjoy most?
Confess. I’m over halfway now. It’s the turning point. I didn’t want to put it down but posting and cheering is calling my name.
  8. Which did you enjoy least?
    Not even applicable!
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
I was a cheerleader for #TeamDorothy. There were only a few of us assigned to Youtube accounts but after Andi sent her cheers early on, I think I was the only one!
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
Most definitely will be back in October. I’m not sure what role I will play. Might go back to using Twitter and just read. I say that, but I love cheering!

That’s me for another #readathon. I’ll be on Twitter for the next half hour or so, but after that, it’s bed time. Happy Dewey’s!
